Chapter 1 (revised)

Revelation of Evil: Book 1, Chapter 1Clineaus Grey sat as still as the boulder beside him, somewhere in the wilderness of the mid-west. With is black trench coat moving slightly in the steady breeze and hands clasped behind his back he stood there and waited for the inevitable arrival of Special Agent Gabriel “Cody” Matthews of the F.B.I. The reason for Cody’s coming was that 24 hours earlier Clineaus Grey had placed a call in to the Federal Bureau of Investigations regarding a tip that he had about a potential threat to national security. Clineus had requested Cody, and Cody alone for the simple fact that he was the only one Clineaus trusted even though neither man had ever met the other. Clineus chuckled at the thought and disappeared into the forest to wait.Special Agent Gabriel Matthews looked out the window of the black hawk chopper at the rolling hills of central Missouri. The last 72 hours for him had been a whirlwind to say the least. He had just finished busting the biggest drug producer this side of the Mexican border and he had totaled his truck in the process; a reason why he was in this chopper. And of all the things that could be going through his mind at the moment, oddly enough, was why people kept on calling him Cody. He had been called that as long as he could remember. He would ask people why they called him that and he would always get the same answer: “I guess it just fits you better” they would say, and even his own mother would agree with them! Waking up from his day dream, Cody heard the pilot’s voice crackling in the ancient headset reminding him that they where almost to the rendezvous point.“Thanks Mac!” Cody said“No problem Cody.” Mac replied with a smile. Mac had been Cody’s friend and mentor ever since Cody had joined the F.B.I. Cody doubted that he could have even made it this far if it had not been for Mac’s help.“I know it’s none of my business, but why you and why here?” Asked Mac“I really don’t know Mac.” Cody said. “I’ve never even heard of anyone named Clineaus Grey. I’m not sure if Chief is doing the right thing sending me into the unknown after a tip that we don’t even know is credible!”“Now Cody you don’t need to go and get mad at him now.” Said Mac “He probably has a good reason for this, and even if he doesn’t and this turns out to be just another crackpot out to get on T.V, everything will come out in the wash.” This kind of calm counsel from Mac was what had kept Cody from getting kicked out of the academy.Cody looked out the window of the chopper for the signal flair that Clineaus had said would be the sign for them to let Cody out. Suddenly the sky was illuminated with a brilliant red that stood out drastically even against the mid morning sun.“There!” They spoke at the same time.“You gona’ be ok kid?” asked Mac.“I’ll be fine Mac. No need to worry. Just don’t crash or anything like that.”“Ha-ha! I’ll try not to! See ya’ later kid!” Mac waved Cody off the chopper and watched as Cody slowly released the rope and lowered himself to the ground. Once there Cody jumped clear of the harness, checked his gear and then waved the chopper off and watched it disappear over the trees. As soon as the chopper was out of site Cody took out his handheld G.P.S and started to get his bearings. Finding the right way to go Cody looked up; supposedly to start out on his search, but found that he was no more than 6 feet from the strangest creature Cody had ever seen. It stood about 7’ tall, and appeared to have a hard exoskeleton of sorts. Its jaws were unlike anything familiar to Cody, in fantasy or not, they opened sideways to reveal to rows of crimson red teeth, which contrasted greatly with the white glossy hue of the beast. Cody opened his mouth to speak but quickly shut it in preference to running. Running through the woods at full speed is difficult enough, but running through the woods with a backpack full of equipment is really hard. A quarter mile later Cody stopped and looked back. Not seeing anything he collapsed on the ground with exhaustion. To his horror the thing was standing right in front of him! “Now, now” it said in a raspy, baritone voice “let’s not take the fun out of this just yet. If you’re smart you’ll keep running, if you’re really smart you won’t make me chase you.” The thing chuckled and turned as if to leave. Cody instinctively reached for his side arm and pointed it at the creatures head.“Turn around and we’ll talk about this.” “I’m done talking.” It said “I’m here for you and I’m not going to let you just talk your way out if it. Now be a good boy and stand up, turn around and walk in a straight line until I tell you to stop.” Cody’s hand trembled slightly. He was having a hard time telling if it was the adrenalin or the fear that was beginning to eat at his senses. Before he decided to take the time to care, Cody aimed and pulled the trigger.BAM! The gun went off, sparks flew and Cody’s left shoulder erupted in pain. The creature turned around and made a sound that might have been interpreted as a giggle.“Nice try Agent Matthews. But you’re going to have to do much more than that if you want to live.”And with that, the creature picked Cody up over his shoulder and bounded off into the unknown.Clineaus Grey watched in horror at the scene that was unfolding before his eyes; Cody being kidnapped by the very people he was being protected from. Without thinking twice Clineaus activated his emergency beacon and sprinted after Cody, and the creature.Meanwhile, Cody was in excruciating pain, partly from the ricochet wound in his shoulder, and partly from the creatures shoulder getting repeatedly smashed into his gut wile he carried his limp form in a run. Cody was barley coming to when he saw what appeared to be a human for running towards him and the creature. What intrigued him the most about this was not the sudden appearance of life nor the fact that they were being chased by this man. But the speed at which this man was gaining on them. Cody estimated that the creature was carrying him at about 30 Miles per hour in great leaps and bounds. But the man behind them appeared to be traveling almost twice that! Cody hoped that the creature hadn’t noticed, but more importantly, he hoped that the man was a friend, and not trying to kidnap him like this guy was.The man was almost on top of them when he drew his gun. This gun was unlike anything Cody had ever seen. It was similar to the standard issue 9mm. Glock that Cody had been issued in the F.B.I. But there the differences ended. As the man got closer Cody saw that the gun had what looked like a laser sight on it. He was close. It was the auto targeting mechanism that’s what started the long list of differences.Clineaus was taking aim at the creatures head and was about to pull the trigger when the creature stopped. Knowing that if his cover was blown, so was Cody’s chances of survival Clineaus fired his gun directly at the back of the creatures head.Cody saw all this in almost a state of delirium and awe. He was being rescued; so he thought, and witnessing a sci-fi movie all at the same time. This was to much to think about and it made Cody’s head throb with pain. Struggling to maintain conciseness Cody blinked and nearly passed out. He blinked again and passed out just before Clineaus pulled the trigger.Bang, sploosh! The creatures head disappeared in a cloud of steaming alien goop. Clineaus looked at the limp form of Cody on the ground and then to the twitching body of the alien, but his sense of victory was short lived when he realized Cody was no longer awake. Pinning his emergency beacon to Cody’s bloody shirt, Clineaus estimated how long it would be until they were rescued.
